English B

The activities that I enjoyed the most about this class were the ones about creative writing. They allowed me to express myself and relate this aspect of creativity with the content that we were reviewing in class.

Character Story

It was a rainy afternoon in London, and I was running towards my house to avoid getting wet, when I caught a glimpse of the most handsome young man I had ever seen. Even though it was just for a brief moment, I couldn’t stop thinking about him. When I got to bed that night, I started to create all these stories in my mind, in which he would’ve seen me too, and fall in love with me. The following day, I went to my uncle’s house, Lord Henry, and told him all about the beautiful boy that I had seen the previous day. After talking nonstop about his deep blue eyes and blonde hair, I saw Henry’s eyes sparkle. He giggled a little, and told me that the young man was without a doubt one of his closest friends, Dorian Gray. I got very excited, because now I had a direct connection to this boy, and we could easily be introduced. I started to plan the perfect party in my head, in which we could finally meet each other. Just as I was going to propose the idea to my uncle, he gasped and stopped me. He told me awful stories about Dorian, and that he didn’t want me to associate with such a conceited and self-obsessed man. I got angry at Henry and immediately walked away. I couldn’t understand how he could say such mean things about one of his dearest friends.

When I got home that same afternoon, I decided to find Dorian Gray by myself, without Henry’s help. I began to analyze how my uncle spent all his days, and I decided that the best places to look for Dorian would be the club, the theatre and the opera. The plan was perfect, but the only problem was that only men could go to the club, and besides, Henry could clearly catch on to my idea. Instead of going to all of these places, I gave my butler a description of Mr. Gray, and sent him off to the locations. After patiently waiting all day for him to return, I heard a knock on my door. It was my butler, Rufus, telling me that he had found Dorian at the opera. Rufus gave him a letter that said that I wanted to meet him the next day at my house.

The next morning, I got up early to put on my best dress, did my hair and makeup, and waited for Dorian to arrive. It was past 2, and no one had shown up yet. I waited all afternoon and he never showed up. After midnight, I went upstairs to my bedroom and cried myself to sleep. I couldn’t believe that I had been stood up by him. How could he do it? He hadn’t even met me yet. I had never been angrier in my entire life, and I wanted revenge. After spending hours thinking about the perfect revenge, I came up with the perfect plan; one that would haunt Dorian Gray for the rest of his life. I got out some old herbs and potions from my attic, and casted a spell over that evil man. His most precious belonging would now be the reflection of his soul, tormenting him every time he looked at it.

Design Books

The IB Learner Profile aspect that I obtained from this piece of work was Open-Minded, as it helped me had a different point of view from my own. My perspective about the book changed, as I now had to relate to the characters, instead of the reader. This gave me a completely different perspective on the book itself, as well as the characters. Doing these types of activities help me analyze books on a deeper level, and discover new themes and symbolism.

Dandy Creative Story

It was a cold evening in England, 1867, when a young man named Arthur walked into a big palace for the first time. He used to live in a poor village nearby, and he was looking for a job as a waiter at the Mortham Fort. He walked in through the back door and went into the kitchen, where he got the opportunity to talk to the maitre. Arthur got the job, and after putting on his new uniform, he went to the main dining room, where he saw the most beautiful woman, Claire. He stared at her for so long, that he accidentally bumped into one of the other waiters, spilling soup all over the place. Claire noticed his clumsiness from across the room, and went to the balcony to laugh. That night, Claire couldn’t stop thinking about Arthur, that handsome waiter who had made her laugh, something that she hadn’t experienced in a long time. Little did she know, Arthur was also thinking about her.

The next morning, Claire went to grab an early breakfast, hoping she would run into Arthur again. She wasn’t able to find him, and she spent all day looking everywhere for him. She went that night to bed, thinking she would never see him again. The following day, Claire finally got a glimpse of Arthur during dinner. She gazed at him for so long, that he looked backed at her, and their eyes met. Immediately, Claire looked away, but her big smile gave her away. Her sister, Victoria, noticed her red cheeks right away, and asked her why she was blushing. Claire confessed her new crush to her sister, and Victoria was shocked by the news. She told Claire that she couldn’t possibly think of being in love with a waiter, as she belonged to the upper-class, and he was a boy from a poor family.

Claire spent all dinner thinking about what Victoria had said to her, but she still couldn’t stop thinking about Arthur. She desperately went out to the balcony to grab a gasp of fresh air, when she noticed someone following her. She looked back, and saw that someone had stepped on her puffy dress, and when she turned her head up, she realized it was Arthur. They looked at each other for a moment, and then they began to fix the dress while laughing nervously. When they finally walked outside, Arthur asked Claire for her name, and confessed that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. After talking for a while, Arthur had to go back to work, but they agreed to meet the next day in the same place at the same time.

Over the next few weeks, they met daily at the balcony, but they had to be careful because no one would approve of their relationship. A few more months passed, and they grew fond of each other. One day, Claire didn’t show up at dinner, so Arthur went looking for her in the garden. She confessed that she was tired of hiding their love, and that she couldn’t keep the secret anymore. Arthur tried to cheer her up, but Claire said that they should stop seeing each other. That night, both of them went to sleep feeling a pain in their chest.

The next morning, Arthur went looking for Claire. It took him a while to find her, because she was doing her best to avoid him. When he finally got a hold of her, he asked Claire to run away with him, to a town where no one knew them. They could start a life together. With tears in her eyes, Claire agreed, and that same night they both ran away from the palace.

The End

Through this project, I developed many skills, but the most important was the Communicators aspect of the IB Learner Profile. I managed to describe a new character through a creative story, and the ultimate purpose was to communicate and externalize this idea to others. This helped me improve my writing skills, as I learned to be more descriptive with my words.

Final Essay

Through this essay, I’m going to discuss the changes that Dorian Gray experiences, and how they affect the outcome of the novel. Dorian Gray is the character that evolves the most throughout the novel, and these changes are mainly due to Lord Henry's influence over him. At the beginning of the story, it is clear to see Dorian’s innocence and purity. This is clearly reflected when Basil is opposed to introducing Dorian to Lord Henry, as he doesn’t want the boy to get corrupted by Lord Henry’s immoral philosophies. As presented in the following quote, “Don't spoil him. Don't try to influence him. Your influence would be bad.”, Basil is afraid for Dorian, and acts protective over him. I would argue that the first moment in the novel in which Dorian’s boyish personality became altered by Lord Henry’s ideas was when Basil was painting his portrait, and Lord Henry made a comment about Dorian’s youth, and how it would eventually go away. This quote makes reference to Dorian’s thoughts after Lord Henry’s haunting words, “The few words that Basil's friend had said to him […] had touched some secret chord that had never been touched before, but that he felt was now vibrating and throbbing to curious pulses.” This concept of youth clearly seemed to affect Dorian, as he became obsessed with his looks and he wished that he could stay young forever. It was at this point that the portrait became enchanted, which eventually had a huge impact on the evolution of Dorian’s personality.

Ater this day, Dorian became intrigued by Lord Henry's way of thinking, and they started to become close friends. At the beginning of their friendship, Dorian didn’t seem to be affected by Henry’s immorality, and he was even repelled and disgusted by it. However, another turning point in Dorian’s identity was breaking Sybil Vane’s heart. This was the first time in the book in which we saw him behave so ruthlessly, especially towards someone he loved. The following quote shows how harsh he spoke to her, “You are shallow and stupid. My God! how mad I was to love you! What a fool I have been! You are nothing to me now.”. In fact, his words were so jarring, that they lead Sybil to commit suicide.

Once again, Dorian’s reaction to Sybil’s death was indifferent and cold, but only after Lord Henry changed Dorian’s mind on the subject. His first reaction to the news was filled with sadness, regret, and even fear. Nonetheless, once Henry talked about Sybil’s death with him, Dorian went from being unbearably upset, to feeling perfectly fine and going to the club that same afternoon. This quote makes reference to how little Dorian cared about Sybil “An hour later he was at the opera”, meaning that he didn’t even give much attention to such a dreadful event, and rather spent the evening with his friend. At this point in the story, Dorian Gray starts to get involved in more immoral actions, and one would even argue that he becomes a little evil. However, he constantly asks Henry if he finds him corrupt and vile, and he tries to convince himself that he is not. On one hand he is looking for his own approval, while at the same time, his portrait reveals to him all of his sins. This creates a conflict inside Dorian’s head, as he no longer knows if he is pure or wicked.

Another important event that transformed Dorian’s way of thinking is when he read The St. James's Gazette. This was a little yellow book that Lord Henry had gifted to Dorian, and he spent all his time reading it. Dorian described it as “the strangest book he had ever read”, and he immediately became “absorbed by it.”. This book made Dorian arrive late to important events, and basically kept him hypnotized and amazed for years, as presented in the following quote, “That book you sent me so fascinated me that I forgot how the time was going." He became so obsessed with the book, that he even ordered a bunch of copies from different colors, so he could choose the color that best adapted to his mood. After all, “Dorian Gray had been poisoned by a book.”

As the years went by, Dorian started to become despised among society. Every kind of rumor and story was told about him, and he slowly started to lose friends. Basil Hallward, who was once one of Dorian’s closest friends, had drifted away from him. It was said that “[…] the most dreadful things are being said against Dorian in London." Another of Dorian’s relationships that had fallen out was the one he used to share with Alan Campbell. He and Dorian used to be great friends, but Alan stopped talking to him, and “Campbell seemed always to go away early from any party at which Dorian Gray was present.” When they met again after years of avoiding each other, Alan resented Dorian, as presented in the following quote, “me. I entirely decline to be mixed up in your life.” It is clear that Alan had stayed away from Dorian because of his infamous immoral acts. Everyone in London constantly talked about how Dorian had become vain and evil.

The part in the book in which Dorian’s character seems to drastically change, is definitely when he murders Basil. In this scene, Dorian lost all trace of the joyful and kind person he once was, and he kills one of his dearest friends without hesitation. The most shocking thing, however, is that he didn’t seem to feel remorse or regret after murdering Doriand, and rather acted unbothered by the event, as presented in the following quote, “He felt strangely calm, […] he didn't even glance at the murdered man.”

To conclude, it is clear to see that Dorian Gray’s character had a complete transformation throughout the book, as he started as an innocent boy, and ended up as a vain man, and even a murderer. It could be argued that these changes were influenced by Dorian’s friendship with Lord Henry, as Basil had predicted. At the end, it was Henry who first got the idea of eternal youth into Dorian’s head. Towards the end of the book, the only thing that Dorian cares about is his youth and beauty, and he is willing to do everything on his hands to remain youthful. Dorian Gray became completely poisoned by his appearance, which was the thing that eventually got him killed.

Skill - Thinkers

The skill that I managed to develop through my final essay was the thinkers one. I had to connect what I had learned in the book to other important topics in class. I also had to deeply reflect about the characters and their specific characteristics. Overall, this essay helped me analyze and comprehend the book on a deeper level, and ultimately improve my understanding about the main themes that it contains.
